[CCEF] New Blog: "Broken Hallelujahs" | Dynamics of Biblical Change

Broken Hallelujahs
by Julie Lowe

Recently I was listening to Leonard Cohen’s popular song, Hallelujah, which is often played around the holidays. As I listened, I was struck by the phrase “broken hallelujah.” It made me think about how in weakness and suffering our praises to the Lord are often imperfect and broken.

In Scripture, “hallelujah” means “praise God,” and there are countless passages that urge us to praise him. In fact, many are imperatives or commands to do so. However, this can send us in the wrong direction. Sometimes we place expectations on ourselves and one another that these praises—these hallelujahs—need to be happy, smiling, and perky. But this is a false expectation. Rather, some of our most precious, heart-felt praise may be born out of pain, hardship, and lament. It will not look, sound, or even be expressed in an upbeat way. Instead, it will be expressed as a broken hallelujah...

"I took Dynamics of Biblical Change in 2008 while my husband and I were living in Asia for a season, expecting this class to equip me to minister to a group of women. What I didn’t know was the extent to which the Lord would use Dynamics to minister to my husband and me.

On a night that I remember well, my husband and I were in the midst of an argument. We were in separate rooms, and we didn’t know how to move forward. So I took a piece of paper and wrote out David Powlison’s “Eight Questions” from class. There we were, in separate rooms in a foreign country, each working through these questions that not only asked about the situation and our responses, but probed further into what was going on in our hearts and what difference the Lord made in this situation.

That night something significant began to happen for us. We began to look more at ourselves before looking at the other person, which was a new framework for working through conflict. We began to see the importance of understanding the heart behind our behavior—and knowing that’s where God wants to change us. It gave us a whole different orientation, a heart orientation. Dynamics of Biblical Change has equipped us to minister to others. But more than that, the Lord used Dynamics as a tool of change in my own life and in my marriage."
