외상적 상실을 경험한 세월호 유가족의 애도과정에 관한 현상학적 연구 = A Phenomenological Study on the Mourning Process of Sewol Ferry Bereaved Families who Experienced Traumatic Loss
본 논문은 2014년 4월 16일에 발생한 세월호참사로 인해 외상적 상실을 경험한 유가족의 애도과정에 관한 연구이다. 연구자는 세월호참사 피해자를 심리지원하는 기관에 근무하면서 7년이 지났지만 여전히 애도과정에서의 어려움을 겪고 있는 유가족들의 애도과정에 주목하게 되었고, 이에 따라 유가족의 애도과정을 탐색하고 지속적으로 지원하기 위한 방안을 모색하는 것이 필요하다고 생각되어 연구를 시작하였다. 연구 목적은 세월호 유가족의 애도과정에 영향을 미치는 요인들과 애도과정에서의 변화 및 애도과정의 의미를 규명하여 향후 외상적 상실을 경험하는 사람들의 애도과정 지원 방안을 모색하고, 애도 상담자 및 신앙 공동체가 해야할 역할을 제시하는데 있다. 연구방법은 세월호 유가족들이 참사직후부터 경험해온 애도 경험의 근본적인 의미를 살펴보기 위해서 지오르기의 현상학적 연구방법으로 연구를 진행하였다. 이를 위해서 세월호참사로 자녀를 잃은 유가족 부모 중 참사 전부터 기독교 신앙을 갖고 있던 11명을 심층 면담하였으며, 개별면담은 참사 7주기 이후인 2021년 5월부터 2021년 8월까지 진행되었다. 연구 결과 총 177개의 의미단위와 47개의 소주제, 12개의 대주제가 도출되었다. 연구를 통해 밝혀진 것들은 애도과정에 영향을 준 요인은 도움요인과 방해요인이라는 2가지 대주제로 나타났고, 애도과정의 변화경험은 8가지 대주제, 애도과정에서 나타나는 애도의 감정과 의미는 2가지 대주제로 나타났다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 애도과정에 긍정적 영향을 주는 도움요인으로는 소중한 가족, 세월호를 기억하기, 유가족 활동, 함께해준 사람들, 신앙의 힘, 그냥 살아감이라는 6가지 소주제이고, 부정적 영향을 주는 방해요인으로는 낙인과 직접적인 비난, 이해받지 못함, 신앙공동체에 대한 실망, 몸에 밴 신앙 습관이라는 5가지 소주제로 나타났다. 둘째, 애도과정에서의 변화 경험은 8가지 대주제로 나타났는데, 애도과정을 겪으며 신체적, 심리적, 사회적, 인지적, 행동적 변화 및 신앙, 정체성, 그리고 삶의 변화를 경험하는 것으로 드러났다. 셋째, 유가족의 애도과정 중 애도의 감정과 의미를 살펴보았는데, 주요한 애도감정은 미안함과 슬픔, 그리움, 우울감, 자책감, 절망감으로 나타났고, 매년마다 동일한 감정을 반복하고 있었다. 또한 애도과정에 대한 의미부여는 이전 삶과의 단절, 새로운 삶을 찾아감, 상실에 몰두, 삶과 죽음의 공존이라는 4가지 소주제로 나타났다. 본 논문에서는 연구 결과를 토대로 세월호 유가족의 애도과정 지원 방안 및 애도과정을 지원하는 상담자의 역할과 신앙 공동체의 역할에 대해서 제언하였다. 첫째, 세월호 유가족의 애도과정을 지원하기 위한 세 가지 방안은 ‘피해자에 대한 지원을 지속하기,’ ‘피해자에 대한 사회적 인식을 전환하기,’ ‘사회적 지지를 지속하기’이다. 둘째, 연구자는 상담자의 역할을 ‘동반자적 전문가로서 함께하기’라고 규정하고, ‘함께함’에 있어 상담자가 갖추어야 할 4가지 자세(긍휼, 존중, 인내, 겸손)와 애도과정에서 보이는 유가족의 다양한 반응들을 이해하고 전문적인 도움을제공할 수 있도록 전문적인 지식과 상담 기술을 동시에 숙지하여야함을 강조하였다. 셋째, 신앙 공동체의 역할로 고통 받는 자와 함께하시는 하나님의 ‘긍휼’을 회복하고 실천하는 공동체가 되어야 하고, 더불어서 사회적 책임을 실천하는 공동체가 되어야 함을 주장하였다. 선행연구 결과 세월호참사 직후에는 관련된 논문이 급속히 증가하였다가 서서히 감소했을 뿐 아니라 7년이 지난 시점에서 애도과정의 현상을 밝힌 국내논문은 아직 발표되지 않았다. 이런 점에서 본 연구는 기존연구와 차별성이 있으며 다음과 같은 의의가 있다. 첫째, 세월호참사 7년 이후 유가족의 애도과정을 연구함으로서 중장기적인 관점에서 세월호 유가족의 애도과정을 재조명하고 향후 변화과정에 대한 지속 연구의 필요성을 제시하였다. 둘째, 애도과정에 영향을 주는 요인을 규명하여 재난 피해자를 지원하는 방안을 제시하였다. 셋째, 신앙의 영향을 살펴봄으로서 재난 상황에서 신앙 공동체가 해야 할 역할과 사회적 책임을 강조하고 그동안의 과정을 성찰할 수 있도록 방향을 제시하였다. 넷째, 무엇보다 기존 세월호참사 연구에 드러나지 않았던 유가족들의 인터뷰를 포함함으로서 다양한 상황에 놓여있는 유가족의 애도과정 경험을 객관적으로 살펴볼 수 있었다는데 본 논문의 의의가 크다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 연구를 통해 참사 7년이 지난 시점에서의 유가족의 애도과정이 여전히 살아있는 듯 하면서도 죽은 듯한 삶을 살아가고 있었지만, 그럼에도 유가족들의 삶이나 신앙, 가치관에서의 긍정적인 변화를 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 후속연구를 위한 제언으로 유가족의 외상 후 성장과 같은 변화 과정을 연구할 필요성이 있다. 또한 유가족 부모 외에도 형제자매와 생존자 및 생존자 가족에 대한 연구를 통해 재난이 피해자들에게 미치는 영향들을 지속적으로 탐색하여 다양한 사회적 돌봄이 이루어질 수 있도록 할 필요가 있다.
This paper is a study on the mourning process of bereaved families who experienced traumatic loss due to the Sewol ferry disaster on April 16, 2014. The researcher focused on the mourning process of the bereaved families who were still struggling in the mourning process seven years later while working at an institution that psychologically supports the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, so I started the study because I thought it was necessary to explore the mourning process and continue to support them. The purpose of the study is to identify factors affecting the mourning process of Sewol ferry bereaved families, changes in the mourning process, and the meaning of the mourning process to find ways to support the mourning process for people experiencing traumatic loss, and to suggest the role of mourning counselors and faith communities. As for the research method, the study was conducted with the phenomenological research method of Giorgi in order to examine the fundamental meaning of the mourning experience that Sewol ferry bereaved families of the experienced since the disaster. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 parents of bereaved families who had lost their children in the Sewol ferry disaster, who had a Christian faith even before the disaster, and individual interviews were conducted from May 2021 to August 2021, after the 7th cycle of the disaster. As a result of the study, a total of 177 semantic units, 47 sub-themes, and 12 major themes were derived. The study found that the factors that influenced the mourning process were two major themes: help and obstruction, the experience of change in the mourning process was eight major themes, and the feelings and meanings of mourning during the mourning process were two major themes. The results of the study are as follows. First, the six sub-themes that have a positive effect on the mourning process are the precious family, remembering the Sewol ferry, bereaved family activities, people who have been with them, the power of faith, and just living. The five sub-themes that have a negative effect are stigma, direct criticism, incomprehension, disappointment in the community of faith, and habit of faith. Second, the experience of change in the mourning process appeared in eight major themes, and it was revealed that they experienced physical, psychological, social, cognitive, behavioral changes, faith, identity, and life changes through the mourning process. Third, the feelings and meanings of mourning during the mourning process of the bereaved families were examined. The main mourning feelings were sorry, sadness, longing, depression, guilty conscience, and despair, and the same feelings were repeated every year. In addition, the meaning of the mourning process was divided into four sub-themes: disconnection from the previous life, finding a new life, immersion in loss, and coexistence of life and death. Based on the results of the study, this paper suggests a plan to support the mourning process for Sewol ferry bereaved families, the role of counselors and the role of the faith community in supporting the mourning process. First, the three measures to support the mourning process of the Sewol ferry bereaved families are ‘continuing support for victims,’ ‘changing social awareness of victims,’ and ‘continuing social support.’ Second, the researcher defined the role of the counselor as ‘together as a companion expert’ and suggested four attitudes (compassion, respect, patience, and humility) that the counselor should have in the ‘togetherness’ and emphasized that the counselor should be familiar with professional knowledge and counseling skills at the same time to understand the various responses of the bereaved family in the mourning process and provide professional help. Third, it was argued that the role of a faith community should be a community that recovers and practices God’s ‘compassion’ with those who suffer, and that it should also be a community that practices social responsibility. As a result of previous studies, not only did related papers rapidly increase and then slowly decrease immediately after the Sewol ferry disaster, but no domestic papers that revealed the phenomenon of the mourning process at the point of 7 years have been published yet. In this respect, this study is different from previous studies and has the following significance. First, by studying the mourning process of the bereaved families 7 years after the Sewol ferry disaster, it re-examined the mourning process of the bereaved families from a mid- to long-term perspective and suggested the need for continuous research on the changing process in the future. Second, this study identified the factors affecting the mourning process and suggested ways to support disaster victims. Third, by examining the influence of faith, the role and social responsibility of the faith community in disaster situations were emphasized, and directions were presented to reflect on the process so far. Fourth, above all, the significance of this thesis is that it was possible to objectively examine the experience of the mourning process of the bereaved families in various situations by including interviews with the bereaved families, which were not revealed in previous studies of the Sewol ferry disaster. In addition, the study showed that the mourning process of the bereaved families was still alive and dead at the time of 7 years after the disaster, but it was able to confirm positive changes in the lives, beliefs and values of the bereaved families. Therefore, as a suggestion for follow-up research, it is necessary to study the change process such as the post-traumatic growth of the bereaved family. In addition, it is necessary to continue to explore the effects of disasters on victims through research on siblings, survivors, and survivors' families in addition to bereaved parents, so that various social care can be achieved.
