청년기 자존감 독서치료:
성경적상담의 관점에서

본 논문은 청년기와 자존감 그리고 독서치료에 대한 성경적상담의 관점에서의 이론적 고찰을 바탕으로 성경적인 청년기 자존감 독서치료의 방향과 내용을 구성한 것이다. 세 가지 큰 주제에 관해 순차적으로 검토한 내용을 성경적상담의 4단계 모델에 결합해 구성하였으며, 성경 속 요셉의 이야기를 한 회기 독서 자료로 재구성해 보았고 고찰 내용을 실제 프로그램 시행에 적용해 보았다. 본 논문의 내용상의 구조는 청년기와 자존감에 대한 일반 심리학적 이해와 성경적상담의 관점, 독서치료의 일반 이론들과 성경적상담의 관점을 비교 분석하는 큰 틀로 이루어져 있으나 형식상의 구조는 청년기와 자존감, 독서치료를 하나씩 살피며 점진적으로 결합해가는 방식을 취하였다.
본 논문은 20대 초중반의 시기를 ‘청년기’로 한정하여 이들을 대상으로 논의하였다. 이들은 청소년기와는 구분되는 ‘전환기와 과도기’,‘심리사회적 유예기’의 특징을 지니며 실제 우리사회에서 청년기의 본격적인 시작단계로 인식되어 청년으로 명명되기 때문이다. 논문의 앞부분에서는 청소년기를 포함해 청년기를 정의했던 학자들의 이론을 소개하였고 청년기의 발달특징과 과제 그리고 이것이 갖는 기독교적 함의를 살피면서 청소년기와 공유하는 부분과 함께 20대 초중반 시기만의 특징에 초점을 맞추었다. 청년기의 신체, 정서, 인지상의 과제는 청년기의 특징인 자의식과 내성을 가장 높은 상위인지인 사유로 발전시키는 것과 관련되며 청년기 자존감에서 중요한 내용이 되는 자의식 정서와 자기 과몰입 경향, 자기애의 극복문제와 직결된다. 자기애의 굴레에 갇혀있는 자의식과 내성에서 벗어나 객관적 거리를 두고 자신을 성찰하는 것은 자기애의 패러다임에서 벗어날 때에만 가능한데, 이것은 하나님께로 시선을 향하고 함께 하시는 성령의 도우심으로 자신의 마음을 진정으로 조명할 때에만 일어날 수 있다. 즉 청년기의 과제는 하나님과의 관계에서 마음의 올바른 지향성을 정립하고 이것이 구체적인 열매로 나타나도록 하는 작업이다.
자존감은 ‘자신의 가치와 능력에 대한 평가적 느낌과 확신’인데 성경에 근거해 이러한 느낌과 확신을 갖는 것이 성경적인 자존감이며, 그리스도의 복음을 통해 부어진 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 깨달음으로써 하나님 앞에서 자신을 가치 있고 사랑스러운 존재로 인식하는 성경적인 정체성을 바탕으로 한다. 자존감에 대한 일반 심리학적 이해는 하나님과의 수직적 관계를 고려하지 않고 타인들과의 수평적 관계에 의해서만 자존감의 형성과 변화과정을 다루므로 명백한 한계를 가진다. 하나님과의 수직적 관계를 배제한 채 자존감을 파악하게 되면 타인들로부터의 피드백과, 타인들의 영향 속에 이루어지는 자신의 내적 감정과 평가, 그리고 그 결과이자 그에 대한 강화요인이 되는 성취경험만을 자존감의 배경으로 보게 된다. 대부분의 심리학 이론은 이 순환 과정을 다루는데 국한된다. 심리학에서 자존감을 논할 때 핵심이 되는 ‘자기’를 어떻게 다루었는지 제임스와 미드, 융, 올포트, 로저스와 코헛 등의 이론들을 통해 검토했고 기독교적 관점에서 이들을 비판하였다. 심리학에서 다루는 ‘상처입고 손상된 자기’는 ‘옛 자아의 실상’을 보여줌과 동시에 ‘옛 자아와 복음으로 새롭게 태어난 자아 사이의 지속되는 투쟁’을 반영하는 것이라고 보았다. 따라서 그리스도 안에서 이미 죽었고 또 계속해서 죽어야할 ‘자기’를 무조건 수용하고 사랑해야 한다는 심리학의 가르침이나 이에 근거한 자기애의 패러다임은 기독교적 세계관, 가치관과 공존할 수 없음을 분명히 하였다. 그리고 자존감에 관한 심리학 이론들을 구체적으로 비판했던 맥그레스와 비츠의 논의를 살피면서 ‘영적 싸움의 인식과 신앙적인 자기 성찰, 참된 회개, 성령의 능력을 의지하는 도전정신’ 등 네 가지 실천과제를 제시하였으며, 자기가치감의 확신 등 성경적인 자존감을 위해 성경적상담에서 점검해야 할 몇 가지 과제를 제시하였다.
책을 통해 우회적으로 자기 문제를 대하도록 하는 독서치료는 사실, 있는 그대로의 자신을 직시할 수 없는 죄인된 인간의 본질에서 출발한다. 독서치료의 일반 이론은 감정이입과 감정정화, 인간의 수동성과 능동성을 보는 관점, 정서적 인지적 통찰 등의 측면에서 성경적상담과의 공통점과 뚜렷한 차별점을 동시에 가진다. 성경적상담의 관점에서 이루어지는 청년기 자존감 독서치료에서는 이 점에 관한 명확한 이해가 바탕이 되어야 한다. 청년기의 인지정서적 과제와 관련하여 기억이나 심상과 자아상, 신념과 동기 사이의 밀접한 관계가 다루어져야 하는데 특히 현재의 정서, 인지와 결합되어 있는 자전적 기억의 왜곡 가능성을 점검하고 재구성하는 작업이 중요하며 이것이 인지적 재평가와 재구성으로 연결되어야 한다. 결국 독서치료는 정서적 접촉을 매개로 기억과 심상의 재구성, 인지적 재구성을 해나가는 작업이며 이 재구성의 기준은 ‘하나님과의 관계의 면에서 자신의 마음을 점검하는 것’이어야 한다. 동시에 이 모든 것을 구성, 재구성하며 해석하는 주체인 자신의 책임성을 깨닫는 것이 목적이 되어야 한다.
본 논문은 기독 청년에게 있어 자존감 논의란 기독교 진리를 통해 성경적인 자존감에 대한 추구로 향할 때에만 의미가 있다는 점, 그리고 독서치료의 일반 원리를 활용하되 ‘하나님이 주시는 무조건적 수용과 다른 한편으로의 엄정한 책임’을 의미하는 ‘하나님의 은혜와 진리, 구원과 성화’에 대해 균형 있게 인식하고 이를 삶에 적용하도록 이끄는 방향으로 독서치료의 내용과 방향이 구성되어야 한다는 점을 강조하고자 하였다.
