19세기 말경부터 심리학이 발달하면서 사회 전반에 걸쳐 큰 영향력을 발휘하였다. 이 같은 분위기는 교회 안에도 들어와 목회자들은 목회현장에서 상담을 하기 위해서 심리학을 공부해야만 하는 상황이 되었다. 하지만 심리학적 접근은 ``하느님의 가치``를 우선하는 기독교 상담의 정체성을 훼손하는 여러 전제와 방법 등을 수반하였다. 따라서 교회 안의 세속적 심리학에 대한 반대적 분위기가 1960년대부터 형성되었다. 인간중심이 아닌 하나님의 말씀을 우선으로 하는 ``성경적 상담``은 이러한 배경 속에서 생겨났다. 아담스를 중심으로 하는 복음주의적 관점을 지닌 상담자들이 ``상담이 성서적 잣대를 따라야 한다``는 뜻을 가지고 ``하나님의 영광``을 위한 기독교 상담의 발전에 힘을 기울여왔다. ``상담의 원리``로서의 성경중심주의는 성경적 상담의 주요한 토대를 지니고 있다.

Psychology has been developed from the late 19th century and influenced greatly on the society. Also, this atmosphere came into church and made pastors have to study psychology in order to counsel. But psychological approach was accompanied by some principles and methods that caused damage to the identity of Christian counseling seeking God`s value first. Therefore, the negative mood toward secular psychology in church was formed in the late 1960s. ``Biblical counseling`` emerged from the situation that gives top priority not to human-centered, but to the word of God. Counselors centering around Jay Adams who seek evangelical perspective have devoted themselves to develop Christian counseling for ``the glory of God`` with the goal ``counseling must pursue biblical criterion``. Scripture-centered view as ``fundamentals of counseling`` has kept important cornerstone of biblical counseling.
